Ive been a little behind in the weeds this week.
It has been a few weeks since the election, and Taupō is still waiting for leadership to connect. The lake is off-limits, rates are confusing, and the silence from the top could be bottled and sold as tranquillity.
You would think he would be on to it by now, but I guess the old ticker is still buffering too. Maybe the Wi-Fi was not the only thing that almost disconnected before day one.
John, if you are out there, please send a fire signal. Or at least a carrier pigeon. Just something to let Taupō know you are still alive.
Meanwhile, the council communications machine is running hotter than a geothermal vent, pumping out cheerful posts about progress, projects, and photo opportunities. You would think everything was fine if you did not look too closely at the sewage warnings.
And then there is Oroko Rise, the “affordable housing solution” parked right next to million-dollar mansions. It is the slum waiting to happen, a patchwork of cracked drives and water runoff framed by designer fences. Taupō’s own social experiment in contrast: wealth on one side of the street, unfinished dreams on the other.
Lovely view from Condor Avenue, I am sure, unless you are looking downhill at the new housing estate. Taupō’s own Addison 2.0: density without design, sprawl without soul. Whoever approved that needs a good look at themselves. Was it quality over profit, or profit over quality? It is hard to tell from here, but the mud speaks for itself.
Add it all up: sewage in the lake, a mayor still buffering, communications on overdrive, and a housing estate that looks like a future headline. If this is leadership on dial-up, Taupō had better hope the modem does not disconnect.
