I did plan to write about this… but I couldn’t articulate it because of the disgust I felt.

When multiple locals quietly message you, one after the other, saying they never received their rates notice and are now facing penalties… something doesn’t sit right.

One person told me they’d rung Council five times trying to get a copy. Another said their notice finally arrived in the mail after the payment deadline had already passed, and they were slapped with a $104 late fee. Others were told, “We posted it,” with no evidence to back that up. Some were told it was emailed. Some weren’t. And some got completely different answers depending on who they spoke to. One even had to get theirs printed out at the iSite.

It’s the kind of problem that’s easy to brush off unless you’re the one paying for it.

And that’s the point.

If people are being penalised for notices they never received, especially in an election season where silence is strategic… then this is no longer a hiccup. It’s a system failure.

So I’ve submitted a formal LGOIMA request asking Council:

When the notices were actually posted

How many were sent by post vs emails

Whether there were any known issues or delays

How many people had penalties applied or reversed

And what (if anything) was communicated internally about the problem

They’ve acknowledged the request. Legally, they have 20 working days to respond.

I’ll post an update once I get the documents back.

To be continued…
