We’re nearing the finish line.
The flyers are soggy.
The forums are done. (Nearly)
The tea has been spilled.
We’ve survived the gossip, the back-patting, the awkward “networking,” and the performative photo ops, but somehow still haven’t asked the stuff that actually matters.
So before someone crowns themselves, the rates-capping messiah or cuts the wrong budget line to “look fiscally responsible”…
Here are the Questions We Should Be Asking:
Crisis Leadership
Who do you become in an emergency?
Can you make a hard call without a workshop first?
Have you even done Civil Defence training?
Real Accountability
How will you keep the CEO and council staff in check without just blaming them when things go sideways?
Will you commit to pushing back in public not just in private?
Communication
Will you front up when you make a mistake or hide behind PR?
Can you speak plainly, not just “councilese”?
Transparency
Will you publish your conflicts of interest before the media drags it out of you?
Will you share who influences your decisions behind the scenes?
Culture
How will you deal with bullying or dysfunction on council?
(And don’t say “teamwork makes the dream work”; we’re adults here.)
Local Priorities
What won’t you cut when the budget gets tight?
What community space or service would you fight for, even if it’s unpopular?
Geographic Reality Check
We live on a flipping supervolcano. Are you prepared for that?
(No, really, if the lake fizzes, are you the one we trust?)
If your whole campaign fits on a fridge magnet, maybe rethink your application.
This isn’t a marketing gig. It’s a leadership role in a town that needs grownups, not influencers.
Someone Rip the bandaid off already.
