Are you ready to decode the greatest hits of local government jargon and political waffle? You know the drill; watch a council meeting, an interview with your favourite mayoral candidate, or that “official statement” that sounds like a 500-word essay on absolutely nothing… but with way more questions than answers.
Here’s how it goes down:
Every time you hear a PR buzzword or some classic political spin phrase, yell out: “PR SPIN!”
Then take a celebratory sip of whatever poison fuels your patience; be it tea, coffee, or something a bit stronger. (No judgment here.)
Phrases include :
“Updating the joint management agreement”
“Absolutely got nothing to do with co-governance”
“Protecting the lake and tributaries”
“A big crowd… people reasonably happy”
“On the ground pretty much all day” (cue the “Where exactly?” reaction)
“65% of the land is owned by Ngāti Tūwharetoa”
“Setting up a subcommittee”
“Chipping away and to and fro”
“Ready to present to the public”
“Consultation looks like a possibility” (maybe)
“Privately owned lake” (a bit of factual spin there)
“Wonderful relationship”
“If public say no, we’ll take it on board” (softening but vague)
“Protecting one of the cleanest lakes in the world”
“Nothing to do with co-governance at all” (repeated for emphasis)
If there’s any classic buzzwords or phrases I’ve missed, shout ’em out in the comments below! Let’s make this the ultimate PR Spin Hall of Fame; because nothing says community like bonding over jargon and polite eye-rolls.
